Sunscreen ingredients you may want to avoid

The Lowdown on Sunscreen Ingredients to Avoid & How-to Protect Your Skin Safely

We all know, life is just better with a tan. Especially now that summer is in full swing and styles are showing more skin than ever.

Nothing beats the feeling of a healthy bronzed glow. Nevertheless, it's essential to protect our skin from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) rays. Sunscreen is an indispensable part of our sun-protection routine, but not all sunscreen products are created equal. Some contain ingredients that can potentially pose risks to our health and the environment. In this blog post, we will shed light on sunscreen ingredients to avoid and provide safer alternatives for protecting your precious skin.

Oxybenzone

Oxybenzone is a widely used ingredient in many sunscreens due to its UV-absorbing properties. However, concerns have been raised regarding its impact on hormone disruption, allergies, and potential coral reef bleaching. Studies suggest oxybenzone can penetrate the skin and mimic or interfere with hormones. To stay on the safe side, it is advisable to opt for sunscreens labeled "oxybenzone-free" or look for alternative UV filters such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.

Octinoxate

Another ingredient commonly found in sunscreens is octinoxate. Although it offers effective UVB protection, this chemical compound has been linked to hormone disruption and potential negative effects on marine life. When shopping for sunscreen, make sure to choose octinoxate-free options, especially if you plan to swim in oceans or other bodies of water.

Parabens

Parabens are preservatives frequently used in cosmetic products, including sunscreen. While their purpose is to prevent the growth of bacteria, parabens have raised concerns due to their potential endocrine-disrupting properties. Studies have suggested a link between parabens and breast cancer, leading many to seek paraben-free alternatives. If you are concerned about the potential risks associated with parabens, opt for sunscreens that are labeled "paraben-free."

Retinyl Palmitate

Retinyl Palmitate, a form of vitamin A, is often added to sunscreens for its purported anti-aging properties. However, when exposed to sunlight, retinyl palmitate can undergo a chemical reaction that produces harmful free radicals, increasing the risk of skin damage. It is advised to steer clear of sunscreen products containing this ingredient, especially if you spend prolonged periods in direct sunlight.

Fragrance

While it may be tempting to choose a sunscreen with a delightful fragrance, we should exercise caution. "Fragrance" or "parfum" on the ingredient list can encompass a mix of undisclosed chemicals, some of which can potentially cause skin irritation or even have long-term health effects. Opting for unscented or naturally scented sunscreen is a safer choice.

When it comes to sunscreen, protecting your skin should not come at the expense of your health or the environment. Avoiding sunscreen ingredients like oxybenzone, octinoxate, parabens, retinyl palmitate, and fragrance ensures safer sun protection.

Instead, choose sunscreens that utilize alternative UV filters like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, and always select products labeled as "oxybenzone-free," "octinoxate-free," or "paraben-free." Mineral sunscreens are usually a safer choice for sensitive skin. By making informed choices, you can enjoy the sun while safeguarding your skin's health and the well-being of our planet.
